Build a CV that gets past applicant tracking systems (ATS) and into human hands, without inflating your experience or losing hours to formatting. Fill in what is real once, and this toolkit helps you match it to each job, tighten your bullets, check it for common ATS problems and export it as clean plain text. It also includes 25 ATS friendly CV templates for different roles and career stages, and 12 prompts for polishing your CV with any AI assistant.
Integrity notice: Only include claims you can confidently defend in an interview. This toolkit helps you describe your real experience clearly, not invent it. Exaggerated CVs get withdrawn at the offer stage.
How to use this toolkit
- Choose your track. Pick the one that matches where you are now, not where you want to be. It changes the advice and the order of sections in your export.
- Fill in your CV. Type or paste each section. Everything is saved on this device as you type, and every tool below uses the same CV.
- Paste a job description. See which of its keywords your CV already covers and which are missing.
- Rewrite weak bullets and run the ATS check. Fix what it flags, then copy or download your CV as plain text and paste it into Word or Google Docs.
- Need a starting point? Copy one of the 25 templates further down, fill in the brackets and paste each section into the fields.
1. Choose your track
Each track has its own advice on what to lead with. Your choice also sets the section order of the CV you export in step 6.
Choose your track
Entry level track
Lead with Education and Projects before Experience. Your summary should show potential, not fake depth. Quantify academic or internship results where they are real. Avoid padding with vague volunteering entries unless they are genuinely relevant.
Section order in your export: Summary, Education, Projects, Skills, Experience, Certifications and extras.
2. Fill in your CV
The hints under each box show what recruiters and ATS software expect for your track. Write in plain text: one role per block, one bullet per line.
Your CV
Hints below follow the entry level track. Leave blank anything you do not have yet.
Name, target job title, then city, phone, email and LinkedIn on one line.
Two or three sentences: your degree, key skills and one outcome from an internship or project. No “passionate about” openers.
List software, tools and technical skills from coursework and internships. Hard skills only; soft skills belong in your bullets.
Write each role as Job title, Company, City, Month Year to Month Year. Then three to five bullets per role, each starting with a strong verb.
Personal, academic or freelance projects. Especially useful for entry level candidates and career switchers.
Degree, institution, year. Add relevant modules or your final year project if you are early in your career. Keep it brief once you have five or more years of experience.
Name, issuer, year. Only relevant, well known certifications that are still valid. Languages, NYSC and awards can go here too.
3. Match the job description
Paste the full job posting to see what the role is really asking for. The toolkit pulls out the most repeated words and two word phrases and marks each one as already in your CV or missing. Add a missing keyword only where it honestly describes your experience, ideally in your summary, skills or a bullet.
Job description keywords
Paste the whole posting, including requirements, responsibilities and nice to have sections.
Keywords will appear here once you paste a job description.
4. Rewrite weak bullets
Paste your current bullets, one per line. The rewriter swaps weak openers such as “responsible for” and “helped with” for direct verbs, removes buzzwords, and flags bullets that would be stronger with a number or a concrete result.
Bullet rewriter
Rewritten bullets will appear here.
The rules it follows:
- Start with a strong verb, in the past tense for previous roles.
- Be specific rather than vague: name the tool, the audience or the output.
- Include an outcome or a number where you genuinely have one.
- Keep each bullet to two lines or fewer.
- No “responsible for”, “helped with” or “was involved in”, and no buzzwords such as “dynamic” or “results driven”.
The rewrite is a starting point. Read every bullet before you use it and make sure it still says exactly what you did.
5. Run the ATS check
These are common reasons a CV gets filtered out before a person reads it. The check runs on the CV you filled in above and updates as you edit.
ATS check
1 of 8 checks passed. This updates as you edit your CV.
- Check: Dates on experience entriesNo experience entered yet.
- Check: Consistent verb tenseNo experience entered yet.
- Passed: Vague verbsNo weak verbs found.
- Fix: Professional summary presentSummary is missing or too short.
- Fix: Skills section presentSkills section is empty. ATS keyword matching relies on it.
- Check: Job description keyword coveragePaste a job description in the keyword section to check how well your CV matches it.
- Check: Graphics, tables and columnsThis check cannot see your Word or Google Docs layout. Avoid text boxes, columns, headers and footers, icons and skill tables: ATS parsers often skip them.
- Check: Education sectionNo education entry. Add at least your highest qualification.
Formatting rules that keep a CV readable by ATS software
- Use one column. Avoid text boxes, tables, icons, skill bars and photos.
- Use standard headings: Professional Summary, Skills, Experience, Education, Certifications.
- Put your contact details in the body of the page, not in the header or footer.
- Use a common font such as Calibri, Arial or Georgia at 10 to 12 points.
- Write dates the same way everywhere, for example “Jun 2023 to Aug 2024”.
- Send the file type the employer asks for. If they do not say, a .docx or a text based PDF is usually safe.
- Name the file clearly, for example YourName_CV_DataAnalyst.pdf.
6. Copy and export
Your CV is exported as plain text, which is ATS safe because it has no columns, tables or graphics. Paste it into Word or Google Docs, apply one simple font, then save it as a .docx or PDF.
Copy and export
Sections follow the entry level track: Summary, Education, Projects, Skills, Experience, Certifications and extras. Empty sections are left out.
Your CV as plain text
Fill in the CV fields above and your plain text CV appears here.
Only include claims you can confidently defend in an interview.
25 ATS friendly CV templates
Every template is plain text in a single column with standard headings, so it reads cleanly in any ATS. Replace everything in [brackets] with your real details, delete lines that do not apply, and only keep numbers you can back up. Filter by track to find the closest match, then paste each section into the CV fields above to check and export it.
CV templates
Use the filters to match your track. Copy one template, or download the whole set as a text file.
Graduate or entry level
Use this when you finished your degree in the last two years and have little paid work experience. Education and projects come first.
