Questions
Is the token count exact?
No. Each model uses its own tokenizer, so the same text can produce a different number of tokens in different models. This tool gives an estimate from two rules of thumb: characters divided by four, and words multiplied by 1.33.
What is a context window?
It is the maximum number of tokens a model can consider at once, counting your input and its reply together. Text beyond the limit is cut off or rejected.
Why do some languages use more tokens?
Tokenizers are usually trained mostly on English text, so other languages, code and unusual symbols are often split into more, smaller tokens. Expect the real count to be higher for that kind of text.
