How bold text on LinkedIn works

LinkedIn posts have no formatting buttons, so there is no real bold or italic. The bold text you see in people's posts is made of look alike letters from a Unicode block meant for maths, such as the bold sans serif letters. They are separate characters, which is why they survive copy and paste and show up on phones and computers alike.

Because they are different characters, they behave differently from normal text. LinkedIn search will not match a styled word, screen readers may spell styled letters out one by one or skip them, and some older devices show empty boxes. Use bold for a few key words or a short heading, never for your name, your job title or whole paragraphs.

Write for the first lines

The feed only shows the start of a post before the see more link, roughly the first two hundred characters on a computer and fewer on a phone, and less if you use line breaks early. LinkedIn does not publish the exact rule, so the preview here is an estimate, but the lesson holds: your first line has to earn the click.

Short paragraphs, one idea per line and a simple list are easier to read on a phone than a block of text. LinkedIn allows up to 3,000 characters in a post, and the counter turns amber as you get close to that limit.

Questions

How do I make text bold on LinkedIn?

Type your post here, select the words, press Bold and copy the post into LinkedIn. The bold letters are Unicode characters, so they stay bold when you paste them.

Does bold text hurt reach on LinkedIn?

LinkedIn has not said that styled characters change reach. The real costs are that styled words are not searchable and can be hard for screen reader users, so use them sparingly.

How many characters can a LinkedIn post have?

Up to 3,000 characters. Styled letters take up more space behind the scenes, so leave a margin if your post is close to the limit.

Can I undo the formatting?

Yes. Select the styled text and press Plain text to turn it back into normal letters.
