What to put in a two weeks notice letter

A good notice letter does three jobs. It says clearly that you are resigning and from which role, it gives your last working day, and it leaves the door open with a short thank you and an offer to help with the handover. Anything more is optional. You do not have to give a reason, and a notice letter is not the place for complaints about your manager or pay.

Keep it to a few short paragraphs. HR will file it, your manager may forward it and future employers may one day ask for a reference from the same people, so calm and positive is always the safer choice.

Two weeks, one month or longer?

Two weeks is the usual courtesy in the United States, where most jobs can be ended at any time. In Nigeria, the United Kingdom and many other countries, the notice period is usually set in your contract or by law, and one month is common for salaried roles. Read your contract or staff handbook first, because leaving early can affect your final pay or reference.

Choose Pick a last day if your contract sets a different period, and the letter will use that date instead. If your last day falls on a weekend or a public holiday, use the last working day before it.

How to hand in your notice

Tell your manager first, in person or on a call, then send the email the same day so there is a written record. Keep a copy of what you sent. Use the time that is left to document your work, hand over your tasks and say thank you to the people who helped you. People remember how you left.

Questions

Do I have to give a reason for resigning?

No. A simple statement that you are resigning and your last working day is enough. Choose Do not give a reason and the letter leaves it out.

Is an email resignation acceptable?

In most workplaces, yes, as long as you tell your manager first. Some contracts ask for notice in writing, so the tool also gives you a printed letter you can sign.

When does the notice period start?

Usually on the day your employer receives your notice. Check your contract, because some count from the next day or from the start of the next pay period.

Can my employer ask me to leave before my notice ends?

Sometimes. Depending on your contract and local law, they may ask you to stop working straight away and pay you for the notice period instead. Check your contract and ask HR if you are unsure.
