What is llms.txt?
llms.txt is a plain Markdown file at the root of a website, at yourdomain.com/llms.txt, that gives AI tools a short map of the site. Jeremy Howard of Answer.AI proposed it in September 2024. The idea is simple: web pages are full of menus, scripts and adverts, and a language model has limited room to read, so a site can offer a clean summary and a list of the pages worth reading instead.
The format has a few rules. It starts with the site name as a heading, then a one line summary in a quote, then optional notes, then sections of links, each with a short description. A section called Optional lists pages that can be skipped when space is short. This generator follows that format, so the file you download is ready to upload.
Does llms.txt help SEO or AI search?
Be realistic about it. llms.txt is a proposal, not a standard, and no major AI search engine has confirmed that it reads the file when it ranks or cites pages. Google has said its search does not use it. It does not replace robots.txt, your sitemap or good pages.
Where it does help is with tools that fetch a site on purpose: coding assistants reading documentation, agents asked to research a product, and people pasting your file into a chat to give the model context. That is why documentation sites were the first to adopt it. It takes ten minutes to make, so it is worth having if your site has docs, guides or a product people ask AI about.
Which pages to include
Pick the pages that explain what you do and how to use it: getting started, key guides, pricing, API reference and answers to common questions. Leave out tag pages, logins, legal boilerplate and anything thin. Each link note should say what the page answers in a few words, so an assistant can choose the right page without opening all of them.
Questions
Where do I put the llms.txt file?
In the root of your site, so it opens at https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt, in the same place as robots.txt. On most hosts that means the public or static folder of your project.
What is llms-full.txt?
Some sites also publish llms-full.txt, a single file with the full text of their key pages, so an assistant can read everything in one request. It is optional and usually generated by a script from your docs.
Is llms.txt the same as robots.txt?
No. robots.txt tells crawlers what they may visit. llms.txt suggests what is worth reading. To allow or block AI crawlers, use robots.txt.
Can I paste my sitemap?
Yes. Paste the contents of sitemap.xml into a section and every URL becomes a link with a title made from its address. Then trim the list to your best pages and add short notes.
