Canva AI in 2026: Every Feature Explained

You open Canva to make a quick flyer and the editor is full of buttons with "Magic" in the name. There is an assistant you can chat with, an image generator, something called Dream Lab, and a tool that apparently writes code. It is hard to know which ones matter and which ones you are paying for.

This guide sorts it out. We explain every major AI feature in Canva as of October 2026, what each one is good for, and how to use it in a real project. We also cover the new Canva Craft image model, what free users get compared with paid plans, and the mistakes that make AI designs look cheap.

Canva changes its tools often, and some features roll out country by country. Where we are not sure something is available in Nigeria yet, we say so.

What Canva AI Actually Is in 2026

Canva groups its AI tools in two ways. Magic Studio is the older umbrella name for the individual AI tools inside the editor: Magic Write, Magic Edit, Magic Eraser and so on. Canva AI is the conversational assistant that sits on top of them, where you describe what you want in plain language and it creates or edits for you.

At its Canva Create event in April 2026, Canva launched what it calls Canva AI 2.0. According to Canva's Help Centre, the assistant can create designs such as presentations and social posts, generate images, text and code, edit and refine content, and even schedule recurring tasks (up to ten at a time). The 2.0 update added features such as a Memory Library that learns your preferences, Connectors that bring in information from tools like Gmail and Google Drive, and outputs that arrive as editable layers rather than flat images.

Free vs Paid Access

Canva's Help Centre says Canva AI 2.0 features, including Memory Library and Connectors, are available on Canva Pro, Teams, Business and Non-profit plans. Free and Education users get the earlier version of the assistant plus "some AI tools like Magic Write and Background Remover with limited monthly usage". Canva does not publish the exact free limits on that page, so the practical rule is simple: if a tool shows a crown icon, it needs a paid plan, and if it shows a usage counter, you are on a monthly allowance. Check the current Pro price in naira in your app or on Canva's pricing page, as it changes with exchange rates.

The Magic Studio Tools, One by One

Here are the tools you will see most often in the editor, grouped by what they do.

Magic Design: A Starting Point From a Prompt

Type a description ("Instagram post announcing 20 per cent off Ankara tote bags, warm colours") or upload an image, and Magic Design suggests several finished templates built around it. It is best used as a first draft. Pick the closest option, then change fonts, colours and wording to match your brand.

Magic Write: Copy for Your Designs

Magic Write drafts text inside your design: headlines, captions, product descriptions, slide notes. Canva describes it as a tool for writing on-brand copy. It is one of the tools free users can try with a monthly limit. Treat the output as a draft, because generic AI copy is easy to spot. Our guide to product descriptions that sell shows how to make AI copy sound like a real shop.

Magic Edit, Magic Eraser and Magic Grab: Fix Photos

  • Magic Edit replaces or adds something in a photo. Brush over an area and describe what should be there.

  • Magic Eraser removes unwanted objects, such as a stray bag in a product shot.

  • Magic Grab separates the main subject of a photo so you can move or resize it.

These save a lot of reshooting when you are working from phone photos.

Magic Expand and Background Tools

Magic Expand extends a photo beyond its original edges, which is handy when a portrait shot needs to fill a landscape banner. Background Remover cuts out the subject in one click, and Background Generator creates a new backdrop from a text prompt.

Magic Resize and Translate

Magic Resize turns one design into many formats, such as an Instagram post, a WhatsApp Status, a flyer and a YouTube thumbnail, without rebuilding each one. Translate converts the text in a design into another language; Canva says it supports over 100 languages. Always ask a fluent speaker to check translations before printing.

Magic Animate and Magic Video

Magic Animate adds motion and transitions to a static design. Magic Video generates video options from your clips and a prompt, which is useful for short promotional reels.

Magic Insights and Magic Formulas

Inside Canva Sheets, Magic Insights summarises data and Magic Formulas helps write spreadsheet formulas. If you do more serious spreadsheet work, our guide to ChatGPT for Excel covers formulas and clean-up in more depth.

Dream Lab and the New Canva Craft Model

Dream Lab is Canva's AI image generator. You type a prompt, choose a style and aspect ratio, and get several image options you can drop straight into a design.

In late October 2026 Canva announced Canva Craft, its first image generation model built in-house by Canva Research. Canva says it works in two stages: it plans the layout first, then draws. Key details from Canva's announcement:

  • Images up to 2K resolution, in more than 30 aspect ratios or a custom size.

  • Text rendered in 55 languages, and prompts accepted in any language.

  • Trained using millions of human-made Canva templates, with Canva designers comparing more than 25,000 image pairs.

  • Available to all Canva users globally in Dream Lab and through Canva's Public API. Canva has not stated plan limits.

  • Images can be turned into editable layers with Magic Layers.

On the DesignArena leaderboard Craft placed fourth overall, and first in the People and Portraits and the Landscapes and Nature categories. Canva says cheaper Craft-fast and Craft-ultrafast variants are coming, along with support that will let assistants such as ChatGPT and Gemini create Craft images. Our news story on Canva Craft has the full details.

Writing a Good Dream Lab Prompt

Create a [photo / illustration / 3D render] of [subject] for [purpose, e.g. a flyer].
Setting: [place, e.g. a bright market stall in Lagos].
Mood and colours: [e.g. warm, cheerful, orange and green].
Composition: [e.g. subject on the left, empty space on the right for text].
Aspect ratio: [e.g. 4:5 for Instagram].
Text in the image (if any): "[exact words]".
Avoid: [e.g. extra fingers, blurry text, watermarks].

Leaving empty space for text is the single most useful habit. It lets you add real, editable text in Canva rather than relying on the AI to spell everything correctly. If you want to compare Craft with other generators, see our roundup of AI image generators.

Magic Layers: Edit AI Images Like a Design

Magic Layers turns a flat image, such as a JPG or PNG from any AI tool, into a multi-layered design. Canva says it restores text as editable text boxes, separates objects into individual elements, and keeps the background intact behind them. You can then move objects, swap fonts and adjust colours.

When Canva introduced it, Magic Layers was in public beta in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Australia, with global availability to follow. Canva's Craft announcement says Craft images can become editable layers, so check whether the option appears in your account in Nigeria. If it does not, you can still place Craft images in a design and add your own text on top.

Canva Code: Interactive Content Without Coding

Canva Code lets you describe an interactive piece, such as a price calculator, a quiz, a simple landing section or a clickable product menu, and Canva generates the code and a working preview. You can embed it in a Canva website or design.

It is good for small, self-contained widgets. It is not a replacement for a proper web developer if you need payments, logins or a database.

Canva Grow and Brand Tools for Businesses

Canva Grow creates ads from your website, pulling in your products and brand colours. Brand Kit stores your logo, fonts and colours so AI outputs stay on-brand, and the 2.0 assistant can apply those brand settings automatically on paid plans.

If you run a small business, set up a Brand Kit before you touch any other AI feature. It makes everything else look consistent.

How to Use Canva AI: A Simple Workflow

You do not need every tool. For most small businesses and creators, this sequence covers most everyday jobs.

  1. Set up your Brand Kit with logo, two or three colours and two fonts.

  2. Start with a prompt in the AI assistant or Magic Design.

  3. Generate or fix images with Dream Lab, Magic Edit or Background Remover.

  4. Write and tighten copy with Magic Write, then edit by hand.

  5. Resize for every platform with Magic Resize.

  6. Schedule your posts, or plan them with our free content calendar.

Here is a prompt you can paste into the assistant to start a campaign:

I run [type of business] in [city]. Create a set of designs for [promotion or event]
running from [dates]. I need: one Instagram post (4:5), one WhatsApp Status (9:16)
and one A5 printable flyer. Use my Brand Kit colours and fonts.
Headline: "[headline]". Key details: [price, location, phone number].
Leave space for a product photo I will upload. Keep text short and readable on a phone.

Worked Example: An Ibadan Fashion Brand

Tolu sells Ankara tote bags and bucket hats from a small studio in Bodija, Ibadan, mostly through Instagram and WhatsApp. She wants a Christmas sale campaign but has no designer and a tight budget.

Brand Kit first. She uploads her logo and sets her colours (deep orange and teal) and two fonts. This takes ten minutes.

Product photos. Her photos are taken on a phone on her workshop table. She uses Background Remover on each bag, then Background Generator to create a soft festive backdrop. One photo has a bottle of water in the corner, which Magic Eraser removes.

Hero image. In Dream Lab she prompts Canva Craft for a portrait of a smiling young woman holding a patterned tote at a Christmas market, with space on the right for text. She picks the best of several options and adds her headline as real text in Canva.

Copy. Magic Write drafts three caption options. She rewrites the best one in her own voice, adding the delivery areas she covers and her WhatsApp number.

All formats. Magic Resize turns the post into a WhatsApp Status, an Instagram Story and an A5 flyer for her stall at a weekend market. She checks each version, because resized layouts sometimes push text too close to the edge.

Cost. On the free plan she can do much of this within the monthly AI limits, but she upgrades to Pro for the campaign month to use the brand tools and avoid hitting limits. She budgets the Pro fee shown in her app in naira, roughly the price of one or two bags, and cancels in January if she does not need it.

For longer content, such as edited reels and captions across several platforms, she could also try Nexframe Studio, our content creation and editing platform.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Skipping the Brand Kit. Without it, every AI design looks like a different business.

  • Letting AI write text inside images. Even good models make mistakes. Add important words, prices and phone numbers as editable text.

  • Publishing the first draft. Magic Design and Magic Write give you a starting point, not a finished product. Our guide to AI mistakes that make content look AI-generated lists the giveaways.

  • Ignoring rights and realism. Do not generate images of real people or other brands' logos, and do not use AI images to misrepresent a product you sell.

  • Not checking resized layouts. Magic Resize is fast but not perfect, especially for print.

  • Assuming every feature is available. Some features roll out by country first. If you cannot find something, it may not have reached your account yet.

Final Thoughts

Canva AI is now a full creative toolkit rather than a few clever buttons. The trick is to use a small set of tools well: Brand Kit, a good prompt, Dream Lab or photo fixes, Magic Write as a draft, and Magic Resize. Add Canva Craft for original images and Canva Code when you need something interactive.

Magic Studio is the name for Canva's individual AI tools, such as Magic Edit and Magic Write. Canva AI is the conversational assistant that can use those capabilities when you describe what you want.

What is Canva Craft?

Canva Craft is Canva's own image generation model, announced in late October 2026. It is available to all Canva users in Dream Lab, creates images up to 2K resolution and can render text in 55 languages.

Can I use Canva's AI images commercially?

Canva has usage guidelines for Magic Studio content. Read Canva's terms for AI-generated content before using images in ads or on products, and avoid generating real people, trademarks or misleading product images.

Does Canva AI work in Nigeria?

Most features, including Dream Lab and Canva Craft, are available to users in Nigeria. Some newer features, such as Magic Layers, launched first in a handful of countries, so availability can vary.

What can Canva Code build?

It can build small interactive pieces such as quizzes, calculators and simple interactive pages that you embed in Canva designs or websites. It is not suited to full apps with payments or user accounts.

Should I use Canva's tools or a separate image generator?

For marketing designs, staying inside Canva saves time because images go straight into your layout. For highly specific artistic work, a dedicated image generator may give you more control.
