What changed in 2026
ChatGPT Images 2.5 arrived on 8 September 2026, following Images 2.0 in April. OpenAI says it is up to 50% faster and keeps people from your reference photos more faithfully. DALL-E 2 and 3 were retired in May.
Nano Banana 2.1, Google's latest image model, became generally available on 6 October 2026, with 4K output, up to 14 reference images and consistency for up to four characters.
Midjourney V8 brought much faster generation and native 2K images.
FLUX 3 Image from Black Forest Labs launched on 1 October 2026 with 4K output and precise editing.
New labelling rules: the EU's AI Act transparency rules, which require AI generated images to be marked, began applying in August 2026.
ChatGPT Images: the best all rounder
ChatGPT's image generator is the easiest place to start. Describe what you want in plain language, upload a photo to edit, or sketch an idea, and refine it by chatting. Version 2.5 adds templates, image comments, prompt sharing and a Sketch tool, and you can select just one part of an image to change.
Best at: following long, detailed prompts, readable text in images such as posters and menus, and editing. In the Artificial Analysis text to image leaderboard in October 2026, OpenAI's GPT Image 2.5 models held the top two places.
Free or paid: free users get limited image creation. Paid plans give more images, and Plus and Pro add "Images with thinking" for harder requests. Every image carries Content Credentials and an invisible SynthID watermark.
Google Gemini and Nano Banana: the best for editing
"Nano Banana" is the nickname for Google's image models in the Gemini app. The family now includes Nano Banana 2.1, Nano Banana Pro and Nano Banana 2 Lite.
Best at: editing your own photos with simple instructions ("remove the background", "make it evening", "put this product on a wooden table"), combining several reference images, keeping the same character across images, and making infographics.
Free or paid: free with daily limits, and Google AI Plus and Pro give two and four times as much. In Nigeria, AI Plus is NGN 7,700 a month, and eligible university students can get it free for a year if they redeem the offer by 31 December 2026. Images carry an invisible SynthID watermark and Content Credentials.
Midjourney: the most artistic
Midjourney remains the favourite of many designers and artists for its distinctive, polished style. You use it on its website or in Discord, and it can also turn images into short videos.
Best at: illustration, concept art, fashion, moody photography and anything where style matters more than precise instructions.
Free or paid: there is no free plan. Basic costs $10 a month, or $8 a month billed yearly. Companies earning more than $1 million a year must use the Pro or Mega plan for commercial use.
Ideogram: the best for text and logos
Ideogram made its name by getting words right in images, and version 4.0 continues that. Use it for logos, posters, book covers, social graphics and anything with lettering.
Free or paid: there is a small free allowance, but free images are public. Paid plans add more images and private generation.
FLUX: photorealism for professionals
FLUX, from Black Forest Labs, is popular with designers and developers for realistic photos and precise edits. FLUX 3 Image supports 4K output and up to 10 reference images. You can use it through Black Forest Labs' own playground and API, and an earlier FLUX model is also available inside Adobe Firefly.
Adobe Firefly: the safest for business
Adobe trains its own Firefly models on licensed and public domain content, which makes Firefly the most cautious choice for commercial work. The Firefly app also lets you use partner models, including OpenAI's and Google's image models, under Adobe's credit system.
Free or paid: free users get daily generations. Standard costs $9.99 a month for 2,000 credits, with larger plans above it. Adobe's legal protection against copyright claims applies to business plans and to Adobe's own models, not every partner model.
The best free AI image generators
If you do not want to pay, these give you the most:
ChatGPT: limited free image creation with the same top model as paid users.
Gemini: free daily images with Nano Banana, strong for photo edits.
Bing Image Creator: free images using Microsoft's own image models, with a number of fast generations each day.
Canva: a limited number of AI uses a month on the free plan, inside an easy design tool.
Adobe Firefly: daily free generations.
Meta AI: free image generation in the Meta AI app and Instagram, and in WhatsApp in selected countries.
Leonardo AI: free daily tokens, popular for game and fantasy art.

What the rankings say
In the Artificial Analysis text to image arena, where people vote on which image they prefer without knowing the model, the October 2026 top ten was led by OpenAI's GPT Image 2.5 models, followed by GPT Image 2, Google's Nano Banana 2.1, xAI's Grok Imagine, Microsoft's MAI image model and Meta's Muse Image. FLUX 3 and Nano Banana Pro ranked just outside the top ten, and Midjourney is not included in that ranking.
Rankings measure general preference. For your work, test the same prompt in two or three tools and pick the result you like.
How to write better image prompts
A simple formula works in every tool:
Subject + setting + style + lighting + composition + details to include or avoid
For example: "A Nigerian woman in her thirties smiling while packing an online order, in a bright home office, realistic photo style, soft natural window light, medium shot, a laptop and brown boxes in the background, no text."
Prompt templates for common jobs
Product photo:
Place this product [upload photo] on [surface] in [setting], with [lighting]. Keep the product's colours, label and shape exactly the same. Square format, clean background, space at the top for text.
Event flyer:
Design a flyer for [event name] on [date] at [venue]. Include the text "[exact headline]" and "[date and time]" in large, readable letters. Style: [modern, colourful, minimal]. Portrait format.
Blog or article illustration:
A clean illustration showing [idea], in a flat [colour] style, no text, wide format, plenty of empty space on the left.
Edit a photo:
Edit this photo: [remove the background / change the background to a plain white wall / brighten it / remove the person on the left]. Keep everything else exactly the same.
If the text in your image comes out wrong, put the exact words in quotation marks and ask for fewer words.
Use AI images responsibly
Label and check: many tools add invisible watermarks such as SynthID and Content Credentials, and EU rules now require AI images to be marked. Be open about AI images where readers might be misled.
Do not fake real people: creating fake images of real people without consent can be harmful and, in many countries, illegal.
Check commercial rights: read each tool's terms before using images for clients or products. Free images on some tools are public, and some plans limit commercial use.
Know the law in Nigeria: Nigeria has no AI specific law in force yet, but bills on AI regulation and on protecting people's likeness and voice are before the National Assembly, and existing laws on fraud, defamation and copyright still apply.
To spot fakes yourself, read our guide on how to tell if an image is AI generated.
Using AI image generators in Nigeria
