Photomath
Photomath, owned by Google, is the classic AI math solver app. Point your camera at a printed or handwritten problem, including word problems, and it shows the answer with the steps, sometimes using more than one method. It covers arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, statistics and calculus.
Free or paid? The basic app is free, and Google says core step by step solutions will always stay free. Photomath Plus, at $9.99 a month or $69.99 a year, adds animated tutorials, deeper explanations, hints and textbook solutions.
Best for: checking your own working on homework. It only runs on Android and iPhone, so there is no web version.
Google Gemini and Google Lens
Gemini's free plan includes Guided Learning, a mode built for studying. Instead of handing you the answer, it breaks a problem into steps and asks you questions as you go, much like a good tutor. You can type the problem, upload a photo, or point your camera at it. Google Lens can also photograph a problem and show the steps; it took over the features of Google's old Socratic app.
Free or paid? Free, with limits. Eligible students outside the US, including in Nigeria, can get Google AI Plus free for a year, which gives more usage. You must be 18 or older, verify that you are a student, add a payment method and redeem it by 31 December 2026. After the free year it renews at the normal price, which is NGN 7,700 a month in Nigeria, so set a reminder if you do not want to pay. Check the offer on Gemini for students.
Best for: understanding the method, in maths and every other subject.
ChatGPT
ChatGPT can explain maths in plain language, check your working and make practice questions. Its study mode, found under "Study and learn" in the tools menu, guides you with questions and hints instead of jumping to the answer. It is available on the free plan as well as paid plans. You can type, upload a photo of the problem or talk to it.
Best for: asking "why" questions and getting a concept explained several different ways. Always double check numbers, because chatbots can still slip on arithmetic.
Microsoft Copilot
Microsoft retired its Math Solver mobile app in July 2025, so do not download old copies of it. Copilot is the better choice now: its study and learn mode is free for all users, and Microsoft says it works as a tutor for algebra, calculus and statistics. You can upload a photo of a problem.
Best for: a free alternative to Gemini or ChatGPT, especially if you already use Microsoft tools at school.
Wolfram Alpha
Wolfram Alpha is not a chatbot. It is a computation engine built on decades of maths software, so its answers are very reliable, especially for calculus, algebra, statistics and science. You type the problem, in ordinary words or maths notation.
Free or paid? The free version gives answers but not step by step solutions. Student Pro costs $5 a month or $60 a year and adds steps, practice problems and file uploads.
Best for: university maths, checking a chatbot's answer, and any time accuracy matters more than explanation.
Symbolab
Symbolab solves problems you type, enter with its maths keyboard, or upload as a photo or screenshot. It covers pre algebra through calculus, trigonometry, statistics and some physics, and organises everything by topic, which helps when you are revising one area at a time. It also has an AI chat assistant.
Free or paid? You can get answers for free, but most full step by step solutions need Symbolab Pro.
Mathway
Mathway, owned by Chegg, covers basic maths through calculus, statistics, linear algebra and even chemistry and physics. Type or photograph the problem and get an answer quickly.
Free or paid? You see the answer and some steps free; the full working costs $9.99 a month or $39.99 a year.
Gauth
Gauth, from TikTok's owner ByteDance, is a popular homework app. You photograph a problem and get a step by step solution, and it has an AI live tutor with human experts as a backup. The free version is limited and shows ads.
Best for: quick photo help across subjects, if you do not mind ads.
Khanmigo
Khanmigo is Khan Academy's AI tutor. It is designed never to give away the answer, and instead guides you to work it out yourself, which is excellent for learning. Students pay $4 a month or $44 a year, but individual access currently needs a US address and US billing, so it is not available to students in Nigeria on their own. Teachers in more than 180 countries can use it free, so ask your teacher whether your school has access.
GeoGebra and Desmos
GeoGebra and Desmos are free calculators rather than AI solvers. GeoGebra's Calculator Suite covers graphing, geometry, algebra, 3D and probability; Desmos is the easiest way to draw and explore graphs. Neither will do your homework for you, but both help you see what an equation actually looks like, which makes topics like functions and transformations far easier to understand.
How accurate are AI math solvers?
They are very good, but not perfect.
Dedicated maths engines are the most reliable. Wolfram Alpha computes answers rather than predicting text, so it rarely gets the maths itself wrong.
Chatbots can be brilliant and still slip. In July 2025, an advanced research version of Google's Gemini reached gold medal standard at the International Mathematical Olympiad. Yet a 2024 Apple study found that simply changing the numbers in school word problems lowered the accuracy of leading AI models, and adding one irrelevant sentence cut accuracy by up to 65%.
Photo solvers depend on the photo. A blurry picture or messy handwriting can be read wrongly, giving a correct answer to the wrong question. Always check that the app read the problem correctly.
A good habit is to check an important answer with a second tool. If a chatbot and Wolfram Alpha agree, you can be much more confident.
Will AI math tools help or hurt your grades?
It depends entirely on how you use them.
In a large study of nearly 1,000 high school maths students in Turkey, published in 2025, students who practised with a standard AI chatbot did 48% better on practice questions. But when they later sat an exam without AI, they scored 17% lower than students who never had it. They had used the AI as a crutch. Students who used a version designed to act like a tutor, giving hints instead of answers, did about as well as the group without AI.
So use AI math tools like a tutor, not an answer key:
Try the problem yourself first, even if you only get halfway.
Ask for a hint, not the answer. Use Gemini's Guided Learning or ChatGPT's study mode, or tell the AI "give me the next step only".
Compare your working with the steps, and find exactly where you went wrong.
Do a similar problem without help. Ask the AI to make one with different numbers, solve it alone, then check.
Explain it back. If you can explain the method in your own words, you have learned it.

Using AI math tools in Nigeria
Exams: AI apps are only for practice. Phones are not allowed in WAEC or JAMB exam halls, and in WAEC exams simply having one with you counts as malpractice, even if it is switched off. Build the skill yourself before exam day. WAEC allows non programmable scientific calculators where a subject needs one, so practise with the calculator you will actually use.
Free options first: Photomath, Gemini, ChatGPT, Copilot, GeoGebra and Desmos all have free plans that are enough for most secondary school and JAMB preparation.
The student offer: if you are 18 or older and a verified student, Google's free year of AI Plus is the best value paid upgrade, but remember it needs a payment method and renews automatically.
Paying in dollars: most other paid plans are priced in US dollars, so check that your card allows international payments before you subscribe.
Which AI math tool is best for your level?
Secondary school and WAEC or JAMB practice: Photomath to check working, plus Gemini or ChatGPT study mode when you do not understand a method.
University calculus, linear algebra and statistics: Wolfram Alpha for reliable answers, with a chatbot to explain the ideas.
Graphs, functions and geometry: GeoGebra or Desmos.
Teachers: Khanmigo is free for teachers in many countries, and our guide to the best AI tools for students lists more classroom friendly options.
