ChatGPT is the best all round AI assistant for most people, with the biggest set of features and the cheapest paid plan in Nigeria. Claude is the best choice for writing, long documents and coding, and it has no ads. Gemini is the best choice if you live in Gmail, Google Docs and Drive, and its top model currently leads the most popular public ranking, although Google's free plan now uses a lighter model.
All three changed a lot in 2026. OpenAI moved ChatGPT to GPT-6 in October, Anthropic released the Claude 5.5 models in September and October, and Google launched Gemini 4 Argon on 13 October. What changed in 2026
If you read a comparison from earlier in the year, these changes matter:
ChatGPT moved to GPT-6. OpenAI brought GPT-6 to ChatGPT on 7 and 8 October 2026: GPT-6 Sol on paid plans and GPT-6 Luna on Free and Go. It also added Intelligent UI, where answers can include charts, forms and small tools. Ads began in February 2026 on the Free and Go plans in selected countries.
Claude got the 5.5 family. Anthropic released Claude Opus 5.5 on 22 September, Sonnet 5.5 on 28 September and Haiku 5.5 on 7 October. Its Fable models, which were briefly suspended in June under a US government order, returned in July and are now available on paid plans.
Gemini launched Gemini 4. Gemini 4 Argon reached the Gemini app on 13 October for AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. On 9 October, Google moved free users to a lighter model, Gemini 3.5 Flash Lite. Google also renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook in July.
ChatGPT: the best all rounder
ChatGPT does a bit of everything well. It can search the web with citations, run deep research reports, create and edit images, talk with you in voice mode, remember your preferences, work with your files in Projects, and act as a tutor in study mode. Its ChatGPT Work agent can carry out longer tasks for you on paid plans.
Free plan: GPT-6 Luna with usage limits on messages, uploads and image generation. In countries where ads are sold, free users see ads; our guide to ChatGPT ads explains how to limit targeting.
Paid plans: Go is the cheapest, at about $8 a month in the US, and launched in Nigeria in October 2025 at ₦7,000 a month. Plus costs about $20 a month and adds GPT-6 Sol, more usage and no ads, and Pro plans cost much more for heavy users.
Choose ChatGPT if you want one assistant that handles almost anything, you like trying new features, or you want the cheapest paid plan in naira.
Claude: the best for writing and long, careful work
Claude has a reputation for clear, natural writing, careful reasoning and strong coding. It handles long documents well and is good at following detailed instructions. Projects let you keep files and instructions together, Research runs deeper investigations, and paid plans include Claude Code, Claude in Chrome and Claude for Microsoft 365. Anthropic has pledged to keep Claude free of ads.
Free plan: Claude Sonnet and Haiku models, with web search, memory, file creation and voice, but the lowest usage of the three. Limits reset on a rolling five hour window.
Paid plans: Pro costs $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly, and adds Claude Opus 5.5, much more usage and tools like Claude Code. Max plans start at $100 a month for heavy users. Claude is billed in US dollars.
Choose Claude if you write a lot, work with long reports or code, or want an assistant with no ads. For writing specifically, see our comparison of the best AI for writing, and for coding, Claude Code vs Cursor vs GitHub Copilot.
Gemini: the best for Google users and students
Gemini is built into Google's world. It can work with your Gmail, Docs and Drive, and it includes Gemini Notebook for studying and researching from your own sources, image generation and editing, Deep Research, Canvas and Gemini Live voice conversations. Paid plans include extra Google cloud storage.
Free plan: Gemini 3.5 Flash Lite, plus image tools, Deep Research, Gemini Live, Canvas, Gemini Notebook and 15 GB of storage. The features are generous, but the model is lighter than the free models of ChatGPT and Claude.
Paid plans: Google publishes naira prices: Google AI Plus is NGN 7,700 a month and AI Pro is NGN 28,500 a month, which adds Gemini 4 Argon. University students in Nigeria aged 18 or older can get AI Plus free for a year if they redeem the offer by 31 December 2026.
Choose Gemini if you already use Google apps, you are a student who can claim the free year, or you want the strongest model on the AI Pro plan.

Writing: Claude usually produces more natural, less generic writing and follows style instructions closely. ChatGPT is very capable too and better at formatting answers with tables, charts and images.
Features: ChatGPT has more: image generation, a larger range of voice and agent features, and more apps. Claude focuses on writing, analysis, Projects and coding tools.

Which AI is best for you?
The best AI chatbot for you depends on what you use it for most:
Students: Gemini for Gemini Notebook and the free year of AI Plus, plus ChatGPT's study mode. See Gemini Notebook vs ChatGPT for research and study.
Writers and marketers: Claude, with ChatGPT for images.
Developers: Claude for coding, or ChatGPT if you also want its agents.
Small businesses on Google Workspace: Gemini.
Anyone on a tight budget: start with the free plans, then ChatGPT Go or Google AI Plus if you need more.
People who want no ads: Claude or Gemini.
Privacy settings to check
All three can use your chats to improve their models on personal accounts unless you change a setting:
ChatGPT: Settings, then Data controls, then turn off "Improve the model for everyone".
Claude: Settings, then Privacy, then turn off "Help improve Claude".
Gemini: turn off Keep Activity in Gemini Apps Activity, which also stops chats being reviewed by people.
Business and education accounts usually have stronger protections by default. Do not paste passwords, ID numbers or confidential documents into any AI chat.
What the rankings and numbers say
LMArena, where people vote on which answer they prefer without knowing the model, ranked Gemini 4 Argon first for text in October 2026, followed by Claude models. GPT-6 had not yet been ranked.
Popularity: ChatGPT remains the most used, with OpenAI reporting about 1.2 billion weekly users. Google reported 950 million monthly users for the Gemini app in July 2026. In September 2026 web traffic data from Similarweb, ChatGPT had about 56% of AI chatbot visits, Gemini 25% and Claude about 10%.
Rankings change every few weeks and measure preferences, not your specific tasks. The best test is to try the same real task in each free plan and see which answer you prefer.
