Gemini Notebook (NotebookLM) vs ChatGPT: Which Is Better for Research and Study?

Gemini Notebook, the tool formerly called NotebookLM, is better for studying and researching from your own materials: it answers only from the sources you add, shows a citation for every claim, and turns your notes into study guides, flashcards, quizzes and podcast style audio. ChatGPT is better as a tutor and all round assistant: it explains ideas beyond your notes, helps you write and code, and searches the wider web. For most students the best setup is to use both, Gemini Notebook to learn your course material and ChatGPT to explain what you still do not understand.

Google renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook on 16 July 2026. The product and your notebooks stayed the same, so anything you read about NotebookLM vs ChatGPT still applies, but the name, some limits and several features have changed. This guide compares the two as they are in October 2026.

What is Gemini Notebook?

Gemini Notebook is Google's research and study tool. You create a notebook, add sources such as PDFs, Google Docs and Slides, Word files, web pages, YouTube videos with captions, audio recordings or pasted notes, and then ask questions. Every answer is built only from those sources and includes numbered citations that jump to the exact passage.

It can also turn your sources into:

  • Audio Overviews: a podcast style conversation about your material, in formats such as a deep dive, a short brief, a critique or a debate, in more than 80 languages.

  • Video Overviews: short explainer videos made from your sources.

  • Study guides, reports, mind maps, flashcards and quizzes.

  • Deep Research reports, which search the web, build a cited report and let you import the sources into your notebook.

Each source can be up to 500,000 words or 200 MB. Since the rename, notebooks also sync with the Gemini app. For a full walkthrough, read our guide on how to use Gemini Notebook to study, and for the background, our news story on why Google renamed NotebookLM.

What does ChatGPT offer for research and study?

ChatGPT is a general AI assistant, and several of its features help with research and study:

  • Projects keep chats and files together. The free plan allows 5 files per project, Go and Plus allow 25, and Pro allows 40.

  • File uploads let you ask questions about a PDF or document in any chat, within usage limits.

  • Search finds current information on the web and shows citations.

  • Deep research works through many sources to produce a long, cited report. It is limited on the free and Go plans and expanded on Plus.

  • Study mode, available on all plans, guides you with questions and quizzes you one question at a time instead of giving answers straight away. You can use it with your uploaded notes.

  • Connected apps such as Google Drive let ChatGPT read your Docs, Sheets and Slides.

The big difference is grounding. ChatGPT can use your files, but it is not limited to them, so it may mix in its general knowledge. That makes it more flexible, but also harder to check.

Which is more accurate?

When you need answers you can trust, Gemini Notebook's design gives it an edge, because it answers only from your sources and shows where each claim came from.

The research so far supports that, with caveats. In a 2025 study testing AI tools on a set of 300 documents, NotebookLM produced errors in about 13% of its outputs, compared with about 40% for both ChatGPT and Gemini used on their own. Most of NotebookLM's mistakes were overconfident readings of the sources rather than invented facts. Separately, a 2025 Deakin University study found that an earlier ChatGPT model invented about one in five of the academic references it gave.

These tests are limited and use older versions, so treat them as a warning, not a ranking. Whichever tool you use, click the citations and check important claims against the original source. If you want to understand why grounding matters, our explainer on what RAG is covers the technique behind tools like Gemini Notebook.

Which is better for studying your course material?

Gemini Notebook wins for revising from your own notes. Upload your lecture slides, readings and past questions, and you can:

  1. Ask for a study guide that summarises the key ideas, with citations.

  2. Generate flashcards and quizzes, mark which ones you missed, and retake them.

  3. Listen to an Audio Overview of a topic while you travel.

  4. Ask questions like "where does the lecturer define opportunity cost?" and jump straight to the slide.

ChatGPT wins when you need a concept explained in a new way, a worked example with different numbers, or a patient back and forth tutor. Study mode is especially good for maths and step by step problems.

A simple routine is to learn the material with Gemini Notebook, then take anything confusing to ChatGPT's study mode. Our guide on using AI to study for exams without cheating shows how to keep the learning in your own head.

Which is better for research papers and projects?

There is no single best AI for research, because each stage of a project needs something different. For a literature review or final year project, use them like this:

  • Finding sources: ChatGPT deep research, Gemini's Deep Research, or a dedicated research tool like Consensus or Elicit can help you discover papers. Always confirm that every paper actually exists.

  • Reading and comparing sources: Gemini Notebook is the better choice. Add the papers you have chosen and ask it to compare methods, find gaps or pull out key findings, with citations.

  • Writing: ChatGPT is stronger at helping you outline, improve clarity and fix grammar. Write the argument yourself and use AI to polish it, following your institution's rules.

For a step by step method, read our guide on using AI for a literature review and final year project.

Deep research compared

Both tools can now produce long, cited research reports:

  • Gemini Deep Research is available to signed in users aged 18 or over in the Gemini app, and inside Gemini Notebook, where you can import the sources it finds. Google warns that free users may lose access during periods of high demand.

  • ChatGPT deep research is limited on the free and Go plans and expanded on Plus, with a counter that shows how many you have left.

Neither company publishes exact free limits any more, so expect a handful of reports a month on free plans. Deep research reports can still contain mistakes, so check the sources they cite.

Free plan limits

Gemini Notebook gives free users up to 100 notebooks with 50 sources each. Since 2 September 2026, usage is measured by computing effort and refreshes every five hours, with a weekly cap. Google AI Plus doubles the free allowance, AI Pro gives four times as much, and paid plans also raise the number of notebooks and sources.

ChatGPT free users get the default model, web search, study mode and projects with up to 5 files, with limits on uploads, data analysis and deep research. Free accounts may also see ads in some countries; our article on ChatGPT ads and how to turn off targeting explains the settings.

Privacy

  • Gemini Notebook: for personal accounts, Google says your content is not used to train Gemini Notebook unless you send feedback, and feedback may be seen by human reviewers. School and work Google accounts are not used for training even when you send feedback.

  • ChatGPT: for personal accounts, conversations can be used to improve OpenAI's models by default. To turn this off, go to Settings, then Data controls, and switch off "Improve the model for everyone". Temporary Chats are not used for training.

Avoid uploading other people's personal information, unpublished research you are not allowed to share, or confidential documents to either tool.

For students in Nigeria

  • Free year of Google AI Plus: university students in Nigeria aged 18 or older can get Google AI Plus free for 12 months, which gives Gemini Notebook higher limits and extra storage. You must verify your student status, add a payment method and redeem the offer by 31 December 2026. After the free year it renews at NGN 7,700 a month unless you cancel, so set a reminder. Details are on Gemini for students in Nigeria.

  • ChatGPT: there is no current student offer in Nigeria. ChatGPT Go, the cheaper paid plan, launched in Nigeria in October 2025 at ₦7,000 a month; check the current price in the app before you subscribe.

  • Data: Audio and Video Overviews are large downloads. Generate them on Wi-Fi and download them for offline listening if your app allows it.

How to use Gemini Notebook and ChatGPT together

  1. Create a Gemini Notebook for each course and add your slides, readings and past questions.

  2. Ask it for a study guide and a list of key terms, with citations.

  3. Make flashcards and a quiz, and retake the questions you miss.

  4. Take any idea you still find confusing to ChatGPT's study mode and ask it to teach you step by step.

  5. Go back to Gemini Notebook and check that ChatGPT's explanation matches your course material.

This way you get the accuracy of grounded answers and the flexibility of a general tutor.

Good alternatives

  • Claude: the free plan includes Projects, where you can add files and ask questions across them, plus web search.

  • Perplexity: answers questions from live web search with numbered citations, and has a free plan.

  • Consensus: searches peer reviewed research papers and summarises what they find, with a free plan.

  • Elicit: helps find papers and extract data for literature reviews, with a free Basic plan.

Frequently asked questions

Is NotebookLM still available?

Yes, under a new name. Google renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook on 16 July 2026. Your existing notebooks and shared links still work, and the tool is still free to use with a Google account.

Is Gemini Notebook better than ChatGPT for research?

For research based on sources you have chosen, yes. Gemini Notebook answers only from your sources and cites every claim, which makes it easier to check. ChatGPT is better for finding new information on the web, explaining ideas and helping you write.

Is Gemini Notebook free?

Yes. The free plan gives you up to 100 notebooks with 50 sources each, plus Audio Overviews, flashcards, quizzes and study guides, with usage limits that refresh every five hours. Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra raise those limits.

What is the difference between NotebookLM and ChatGPT Projects?

Both let you group files and ask questions about them. Gemini Notebook, formerly NotebookLM, answers only from those files with citations and creates study materials like flashcards and audio summaries. ChatGPT Projects can use your files but also draw on ChatGPT's general knowledge, and the free plan allows only 5 files per project.

Which is better for students, Gemini Notebook or ChatGPT?

Use Gemini Notebook to study your course materials, because its answers stay grounded in your notes, and use ChatGPT's study mode when you need a concept explained or a tutor to quiz you. Students in Nigeria can also get Google AI Plus free for a year until 31 December 2026.

Does Gemini Notebook make mistakes?
