1. Memory

ChatGPT can remember useful details about you, such as your job, your writing style or the course you are studying, and use them in future chats. Since June 2026 it updates its memory automatically, and it can also refer back to your past conversations.

The hidden part is control. Tap Sources under a reply to see which memories it used. Go to Settings, Personalization, Memory to view, edit or delete what it has saved, or switch memory off completely. Plus and Pro accounts get more memory space.

2. Custom instructions

Custom instructions are standing rules that apply to every chat. Tell ChatGPT who you are and how you want answers, for example: "I am a final year economics student in Lagos. Use British English, keep answers short, give examples with naira prices, and do not use em dashes."

3. Personality and style

Under Settings, Personalization, you can also pick a base style and tone, and turn individual traits up or down, such as how warm or enthusiastic it sounds, and how much it uses headers, lists and emoji. If ChatGPT feels too chatty or uses too many bullet points, this is the fix.

4. Temporary Chat

Temporary Chat is ChatGPT's private mode. Chats are not saved to your history, are not used to train models, do not create memories and show no ads. Since August 2026 you can choose before your first message whether it should still use your personalisation, and you can save the chat afterwards if you change your mind.

Use it for sensitive questions, one off tasks, or when someone else is using your account. Start a new chat and choose Temporary.

5. Projects

Projects are folders for related work. Each project keeps its own chats, files and instructions, so ChatGPT stays focused on that topic. You can also share a project with classmates or colleagues.

Free accounts can add 5 files per project, Go and Plus 25, and Pro and business plans 40. For extra privacy, set a project's memory to Project only under the project's settings, so it does not mix with your other chats. 6. Search across everything, and pin what matters

Since July 2026 the sidebar search looks through your chats, projects, images and documents in one place, with filters. You can also pin important chats and projects so they stay at the top, and find every file you have uploaded in the Library.

7. Branch a conversation

Want to try a different approach without losing a good conversation? Open the menu on any message and choose Branch in new chat. ChatGPT copies the conversation up to that point into a new chat, so you can explore another direction and keep the original.

8. Study mode

Study mode turns ChatGPT into a tutor. Instead of giving you the answer, it asks questions, gives hints and checks your understanding, which is far better for learning. Open the + menu and choose Study. It is free on every plan, but it does not work inside Projects or Temporary Chats.

9. Deep research, steered by you

Deep research works through many sources and writes a long report with citations. The hidden parts: it shows you a research plan first, which you can edit, you can steer it while it works, you can limit it to websites you trust under Sites, and you can export the report as a Word or PDF file.

Deep research is available on every plan, with more runs on paid plans, and the app shows a counter of how many you have left.

10. Search with citations

When ChatGPT searches the web, it shows links to its sources. Click them, especially for facts, prices and news, because AI can still get details wrong.

11. ChatGPT Work, the agent

ChatGPT Work, launched in July 2026, is ChatGPT's agent. Give it a goal such as "compare these three suppliers and make a spreadsheet and a short slide deck", and it works through the steps, browses the web, uses your connected apps and produces finished files. Switch between Chat and Work with the toggle at the top. Work is included on paid plans, not on Free or Go.

12. Scheduled tasks

Ask ChatGPT to remind you of something, or to send you a briefing every morning, and it creates a scheduled task. Find and manage them under Scheduled in the sidebar. Free and Go accounts can have 3 active tasks, Plus 5 and Pro 15.

Tasks replaced ChatGPT Pulse, which ended in June 2026. To get a daily update, just ask: "Every weekday at 7am, give me the top three AI news stories and one tip for my business."

13. Plugins for Google Drive, Gmail and more

Plugins, called connectors until July 2026, let ChatGPT use your other apps: search your Google Drive, read and send email in Gmail, check your Calendar, or work with Slack and Box. Mention a plugin with @ in a chat or add it from the + menu. Manage them under Settings, Plugins, where you can choose whether ChatGPT must always ask before acting.

14. File uploads, audio and scanning

You can upload up to 20 files in one message, including PDFs, spreadsheets and images. Paid plans can also upload audio recordings and get a transcript and summary. On iPhone, the camera's Scan option combines several photographed pages into one PDF, which is handy for notes and receipts.
